Newbier Type 11 Install Instructions - 12-22-2008, 06:17 PM
After learning experices with installing OS X using the Type 11 method (and a lot of help from UnaClocker), I resolved to try to clarify the places where I had the most issues (using lettered entries below the official steps). I have taken the post on the Type 11 instructions and tried to update them to clarify things for those less familiar with all the nuances of OS installs.
*** Note that these are my best recollections of the steps and should be clarified by someone with more expertise before you use on your own.
1. Boot from iso v6.0
http://www.mediafire.com/?yld43ugmjyz (Updated 12/08/08)
____a. Burn a CD or DVD with the iso image (be sure to use software that you can specify you are burning an iso; do not just drag into the CD from Windows)
____b. Load CD/DVD into USB connected drive and boot
____c. Right as boot process starts, hit “0” for boot options
____d. Select the CD/DVD and boot
2. Once booted pull disk and insert Leopard Retail DVD (note if you have problems power cycle external DVD drive and try unplugging/re-plugging), external DVD is 9f on boot prompt (default)
____a. Note that at this point if nothing seems to happen you may have a DVD drive not compatible for reading OS X install disc on the Mini 9)
3. Format drive as GUID in disk util
____a. During the install process, if the drive is not formatted properly, the process will tell you so
____b. Run Disk Utilities
____c. Select the Drive by clicking on it (there may be a sub-folder, but select the highest level)
____d. Once selected, a new button option to the right shows up for Partitions, click that
____e. Select 1 Partition from the left side of the partition window
____f. Once selected, then click on Options at the bottom left.
____g. This opens a new Window with 3 options, select GUID and then close that window
____h. Click Apply in the bottom right of the partition window
____i. Close Disk Utility
____j. You may need to hit back and then forward for your partition to show up on the installable list
____k. Continue with install after selecting drive you just formatted
____l. The install will check to make sure the DVD is compatible (it is optional to skip, but probably a good idea not too)
____m. Note that this part of the install may take about an hour + (it will eventually estimate time remaining)
4. Install will fail at the end but this is ok reboot
____a. At this point remove the OS X DVD and put in the iso DVD
____b. Use the button option on the screen to reboot
5. On reboot boot from boot123 iso above again, choose device 80 for internal drive (or other if you did another drive) and enter -f when booting from your hard drive (might freeze first reboot, just restart)
6. Update to 10.5.5 and any of the other updates, reboot
7. On reboot boot from boot123 iso above again, choose device 80 for internal drive (or other if you did another drive)
8. On the iso above mount the image install.dmg. Run the script MiniScript.
____a. For those new to OS X, to mount the image simply click on it from the UI that shows the drive contents
9. Answer questions (you can choose to turn on quiet boot mode)
10. Reboot (the script take a bit to run don't panic)
____a. Select the option to reboot from the OS here
11. After updates if something doesn't work boot with -f
12. If you want run AboutThisMac.pkg to get better info in the About this Mac...
Should have a fully working system that loads kext from efi partition.
(Note: If you have issues first thing to try is to rerun MiniScript with the update (not new install) option)

Wifi worked for me before the DellEFI installation (before 10.5.6 was installed). Did you boot with -f on your first boot?

Hello all, I have successfully got os x installed but now I am unsure about the next steps.
At this point I still need to boot from syslinux to get into the os and I have no hardware working. Type11's how-to refers to a "DellMini9Utils folder" on the iso - but I do not have this, only dellmini.iso in the root which when I open errors "The following disk images failed to mount: dellmini.iso. Reason: no mountable file systems". Am I a few versions old? I've try to read more about DellEFI but I have to admit this is all new to me, a poor "windows" chap.
Your newbier instructions tell to run install.dmg - again this is something I do not have on my iso. I downloaded http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nt25yzm2qdo - which i believe is v8.0. I hope someone can help - i'm so close! I appreciate you guys are working on more exciting things - but if someone gets five mins and wants to help please please do!
Thanks and keep up the good work.

an iso is an image of a cd which takes special software to "open up" the file onto a CD: then you see the folder etc..
you might search for iso burner to learn about the app and process
