Try creating (or recreating if it is there already) a 'Bluetooth DUN' network adaptor (under networks in the System Preferences). The description can be found here under 'Bluetooth not always coming back after sleep':
I found that the if the bluetooth didn't come back up properly after sleep it would take out all the other system tray services as well showing the beachball (exactly as you described). This fixed it for me.
