The procedure would be the same as for the Mini 9 or 10 or 10v. You need to have an external USB DVD-ROM, or USB flash drives formatted for booting/installation.

The problem right now is the 1012's video is incompatible with OS X.

See this thread for more info on OS X and the 1012:

No, you don't need a DVD drive -- I mentioned USB flash drives. You could use a USB hard drive as well, formatted correctly.

You seems to know a lot-so one extra question (although i read almost all threads here, but still not sure)-can i use external vga display (19") with dell mini 10v and mac os (not as extended display, but as main monitor?

Thanks!

Ask in the OS X section of the forum. But I think I have read there that people have this working on the 10v without problems.

I plug my 10v running SL 10.6.2 to a 24" screen and displays the native screen resolution with no issues (1920x1080).

Had to use the mirrors app to make it run the first time tough.

Default Snow Leopard 10.6 --> 10.6.2? - 03-20-2010, 07:00 PM

I know very little about Netbook Installer etc but a friend lent me his USB and I was able to get my 1012 to boot into Snow Leopard and everything seems hunky dory. I also made the relevant change to the boot.plist to force it into 32 bit mode on boot up.

However when I run updates and restart the machine starts to cycle on and off and there is an error message about 64 bit mode.

Is there an issue here with the upgrade or (more likely) is there something else to be done to force the machine into 32 bit mode?

(Ignore the sig - it's not Win 7 anymore!)

Try the following:

Updating the OS
  1. Close any programs you may have open and save all work (if necessary).
  2. Install the OS Update:
    • 10.5 Leopard: You need to open the 10.5.8 Combo Update package on the USB drive (or wherever you have it downloaded to), DO NOT use Software Update.
    • Press Continue three times, and then press Agree.
    • Press Install, enter your password, and then press "Continue Installion.
    • 10.6 Snow Leopard: Try using Software Update (accessible from the Apple icon in the Menu Bar) first to update to 10.6.2. If that does not work correctly you should use the 10.6.2 Combo Update linked at the top of the guide.
    • Press any agree button and Install buttons necessary. You will probably be warned that a Restart is necessary, that is just fine.
After installation is finished, press the Restart button (if necessary.)
  3. Leopard only: At the grey screen with the progress bar, press any key before the progress bar runs out. Type "-x" so that is looks like "boot: -x" in the bottom-left corner. If successful, it should boot into Mac OS X Safe Mode. Enter your password to login. Do not do this for 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Getting a mach_kernel error after restart?
  4. Go to the Applications folder and run NetbookInstaller. Select the following settings:
    • Volume: <your internal drive>
    • Install Chameleon 2 NBI bootloader
    • Install <your model name> Extensions
    • Regenerate a system specific DSDT.aml file
    • <Any other options you would like, the above are necessary.>
  5. Press Install, enter your password and press OK.
  6. When installation is complete, press OK and restart your computer.
