Question Google Gears on OS X? - 01-17-2010, 05:03 AM

I wouldn't normally ask here, I'd probably snoop around a lot more than I had but I know that Silverlight had the same compatibility issue for some reason.

Google Gears won't give me the option to install in Safari at Gears

Does anyone else experience this?

From the Google Gears page,
"System requirements

* Windows XP/Vista
* Firefox 1.5+ and Internet Explorer 6.0+

* Linux (details)
* Firefox 1.5+
* 32-bit OS (64-bit not supported)

* Mac OS X 10.4+, G4+/Intel CPU
* Firefox 1.5+"

I don't see Safari listed, so that is most likely why it won't work.

So install Firefox. I like it much better in OS X than Safari.

I think the main issue is that Gears checks if Safari 4 is installed and then aborts. The biggest hiccup being that Gears doesn't support 64-bit. Of course that's not a big deal on a Mini. There is a user-compiled version which bypasses these checks here:

Download Google Gears for Snow Leopard

I haven't tried it on my Mini, but I have tried it briefly on a development system I use and it seemed to work.

Honestly though, I just use Firefox.
