Default Crystal HD Decoder: is it possible? - 01-08-2010, 11:51 PM

So, I know that the super devs here have Crystal HD support planned for OS X, but I was wondering how it would be possible? Would you need a special video player, or would you be able to configure/tweak QuickTime 7/X to decode video with the Crystal chip? I ask this because I know that you need special software to play back CrystalHD-decoded video (the Arcsoft Total Media Theatre software or Media Player Classic HC) on the Windows side, but I don't know how it could be done on the OS X side.

If it's possible, that would make me a very happy person :-D.

Sold my Mini 9 for a larger netbook, one that's easier on my wrists and hands.
Current Machine: 2010 MacBook Pro 13", 2.4 GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, Win7 Pro x64/OS X 10.6.3

And I play with my girlfriend's Mini 10v ^_^.

Interested in using MATLAB on the Mini 10v? Check out my benchmarks!

At the moment, an OS X driver exists for the decoder, but it can only be used with XBMC (at least for now).

That's a good sign! I don't know if Apple is in the process of making QT GPU-assisted, but I don't think they'd make it work with the Broadcom chip. Though (and this is more of a pipe dream really), I could see the guys who work on Perian putting something together to make it work. Or maybe a version of VLC that will do this...

XBMC is an awesome app, so I wouldn't mind having to use it for chip-assisted video playback.

(Also, thanks for everything you do, meklort! You rock!)

Perian is open source, so adding support is definitely possibly (I might have to look into it...)

Here's the link to the OSX driver. It was only made possible after Broadcom open-sourced the driver - they released a Linux version as well. Here's more info about the XBMC statement. It's hoped that this chip and driver (now available for all platforms) will make cross-platform development and hardware acceleration much easier. It should be relatively straightforward to add support to FFmpeg which will automatically add support to VLC. That may be the easiest route to accessing the chip on OSX.
