Last night I did some jujitsu on my mini and my iMac, running Monolingual and Xslimmer on both. With Monolingual I kept several languages besides English and Japanese, but I noticed as I ran Xslimmer that it was deleting some Japanese language files anyway.
Tonight I decided to see if I could enable Japanese input, so I went to system prefs-->language & text-->input sources. I see about 50 different language choices there... but no Japanese or Kotoeri. It makes no sense that those should be omitted if all the other languages are still there after running Monolingual. I got a reply on the apple community forum to the effect that someone else running SL 10.6.2 could see Kotoeri, and he suggested that I re-install 10.6.2.
Should I do that, or simply re-install SL and do the intermediate upgrades? How do I re-install - do I need to use my USB?
I feel completely stupid and lost. I really need to be able to input Japanese for my own studies.
I'm using fruux and dropbox, so keeping my own files isn't really a problem. I undid all the file shrinking that xslimmer did, but still not japanese input (and I lost several OSX icons in the process).
I backed up my mini using Time Machine today, but it was after I'd messed with xslimmer/monolingual, but before I upgraded to 10.6.2. I can hardly face the notion of re-installing Leopard and SL on my iMac. Talk about a waste of a vacation! I do have a Time Machine backup of the iMac, I suppose I can use that.
Any suggestions or help are appreciated.
