Default Appletalk + WakeFromSleep = SpinningBeachBallCrash? - 11-14-2009, 09:25 PM

I'm experiencing an problem w/ waking from sleep, that __seems__ only to happen when AppleTalk is enabled.

I am hoping that someone else may have seen the exact same problem, and have a suitable workaround for it. I've seen two older references to it, but nothing of late ... I am not even sure that the problem they mention (in passing) is the same problem that I have seen.
old thread concerning wake-from-sleep-induced-beachball

Symptom: Upon wake from sleep, the Wireless Status icon in the upper right hand task bar is grayed out, and moving the cursor to there brings up the spinning beach ball. Generally, any attempt to launch an app results in more spinning beach balls, until the entire system comes to a halt & must be restarted.

(unacceptable) workaround: Turning off AppleTalk seems to stop any such problems. Unfortunately, I have a printer that I need to access that __only__ works w/ AppleTalk.

Setup: Mini10v with NBI 0.8.3 install of 10.5.8, 160GB hdd w/ 1GB RAM.
=================
EDIT: I may have found an application/widget that could be causing the problem. iStat Pro?

Maybe Fixed!: (I think!)

It seems that iStat Pro could have been causing the problem, or at least contributing to it.

A few users had mentioned iStat Menus, which I'm guessing could possibly use some of the same kexts as iStatPro (this is just a wild guess...). Regardless, I removed iStat Pro from my widgets, and the problem seems to have ceased.

I now have AppleTalk turned back on for my g-wireless eth1 interface and after a dozen sleep-wake cycles, I don't see any of the symptoms of this problem.

I did not change any kexts (as was suggested in the one FIXED thread that I cited above.

I will check this for a few more days, and report back with either a FIXED, or another freeze.

==============================

No joy with just removing iStatPro ... the freezes seemed to lessen somewhat for a long time, but then the freezes-upon-wak-from-sleep suddenly came back with startling consistency and frequency ...

I now once again have AppleTalk turned -Off-, and the freezes are gone. I don't see any clues in the logs, either. I will have to go back to the drawing board and see if I can find a non-AppleTalk solution for printing with the old HP LaserJet 1200 (...and a solution that doesn't yield inexorably/intolerably slow printing of pdfs and graphics-rich content).

OK, no joy here ... at first glance at least.

In the end it turned out that the only fix for this (for me) was to keep AppleTalk turned on. It turns out that _now_ the drivers for the HP LaserJet 1200 are working in Leopard, so I can print normally. ( I guess my experience was tainted back in Tiger ... it didn't seem to work for me there...).

My fix is simply to keep AppleTalk off.
