Default Maybe a potential 10.6.2 Fix? Anyone dare to try? - 11-10-2009, 06:04 AM

File and instructions posted here:

Potential fix for our 10.6.2 woes?

Hmmm... I saw all the patch back old mach_kernel solutions. Still think we can get a more elegant solution than that.....

Hello cyberguerilla, thank you for this link. Sounds interesting.

Can anybody say if this method is a good method for the Mini10v?

I think updating to 10.6.2 should go like this:

Install 10.6.2 combo-update
Do not restart when installation of 10.6.2 is completed
Now run NetBookInstaller.
After that, run the "Fix10.6.2.mpkg.zip" posted in the forum-link of cyberguerilla...
Here is the link of the file: http://hackbookproject.co.uk/Downloa...0.6.2.mpkg.zip

EDIT: THIS WORKS!!!

Is this a better method instead of replacing just the mach_kernel?

EDIT: It seems that this package is also using an old mach_kernel (Build: August 2009). His name is mach_atom.

3) Install the 10.6.2 update, but don't restart yet
4) Run the following commands
Code:
sudo cp /mach_kernel /mach_kernel_10_6_2
sudo cp /mach_kernel_10_6_1 /mach_kernel
5) reboot.

Finally, run NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC3 from a normal boot, not safe mode (bug, doesn't generate the mkexts correctly) so that you use the new extensions / GMA950 drivers / etc.
After I updated with your method, meklort, everything worked fine after I restarted the first time. When I installed NBI and restarted the OS refused to boot, and I had to reinstall.
It got stuck on an Airport handshake on en1 or something.

Hoping it doesn't happen again. I NEED this operational later today.

Great... I see that the experts have a work around going to get 10.6.2 to function.

Quick question, is it better to see what Meklort comes up with later in terms of the kernel or would his solution result in the same in terms of functionality and stability in 10.6.2? In previous posts Meklort stated that there might be changes in the way the kernel functions.

If it's some sort of check with the bootloader, then probably not.

Apple tends to release the xnu source code about 1 - 2 weeks after an update (they have to prune the closed source portions, aka arm support, from the kernel).
So:

1. Is there a potential for better 10.6.2 functionality once Meklort has a chance to work with this? or

2. Will Meklort simply incorporate the same work arounds in future versions of NBI that some of you are manually employing? If so, then I may go ahead and upgrade myself instead of waiting. For those of you that have upgraded....have you encountered *any* sort of instability at all? Reason I ask is 10.6.1 is absolutely rock solid for me with *zero* issues will only upgrade if 10.6.2 displays the same characteristics.

Thanks

If something is working 100% "rock solid" for you and you do not have any issues, then why go through the hassle of upgrading? Just be patient then and wait for a more elegant upgrade solution when it becomes available.

I plan on doing the same thing, no need to jump into something new and potentially have a sticky mess. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"... and in this case, it is not broken and the "fix" could potentially make things worse if you are unsure what you are doing!

Good advice. After 24 hours we already have workarounds. How quick is that ?
It seems likely that we will see an elegant, risk-free solution some time in the future.
I'll just hang for now.

Yes, I agree with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Appreciate the confirmation...I was just wondering because the work around seems pretty easy, but didn't want to jump into it if Meklort's future solution incorporates better functionality with the kernel to OS.

Thanks brother

Yes, this good advice indeed. As it was stated, 10.6.1 is rock solid. I shall stay put for a while.

Yep another one who has no problems with 10.6.1 & is staying put (for now).
Though I noticed an update for the wireless KB which I downloaded & tried to install it BUT.. received a message "this update only works with 10.6.2" (if on 10.6.x) & after reading a little on Apples site noticed that it is also incorporated in the 10.6.2 update - Oh well no biggie!

Default Help boot:0 done after bios load - 11-10-2009, 02:30 PM

#copy the 10.6.1 kernel over

Reboot, rerun netbook installer, reboot, you're running 10.6.2 with a 10.6.1 kernel.

If you don't already have a backup to boot from, you'll need to boot from something which can mount the 10.6.2 hfs+ partition and copy over a 10.6.1 kernel (windows with macdrive installed, linux live cd, etc). I uploaded a copy of the 10.6.1 kernel below. Hope this helps.

mach_kernel
I followed this procedure after I updated to 10.6.2. I removed the HD from the 10v and installed it in an external drive case. I then connected the drive via USB to my MAC MINI running 10.6.1 and copied the mach_kernel over to the mini 10v HD root. Now when I reinstall the mini 10v drive I get "boot:0 done" after the bios loads. I am running A06 bios. any thoughts? Thanks in advance this is a great site with lots of great info.
