can i ask: what does 10.6.2 do? how much does replacing the 10.6.1 undo? it makes one wonder why one should update to 10.6.2 anyway?

Code:
cp /Volumes/InternalDrive/mach_kernel /Volumes/InternalDrive/mach_kernel_10_6_2

Short question:

My internal drive is named "Macintosh HD" ... have I to use "Macintosh HD" instead of "InternalDrive" in your terminal-commands?
And what about the blank between Macintosh and HD.... is this a problem?
Do I have to write Macintosh%HD or something like that?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

You have to escape the space. You can do that in one of a few ways:
Code:
cp /mach_kernel /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/
cp /mach_kernel "/Volumes/Machintosh HD/"

meklort, what has to be done going forward to provide support for 10.6.2+? Are you going to have to modify the kernel sources to add atom support and provide that kernel with NBI?

It really depends on what Apple has changed. If they made it depend on an instruction set that the atom doesn't have, then yes.
If it's some sort of check with the bootloader, then probably not.

Apple tends to release the xnu source code about 1 - 2 weeks after an update (they have to prune the closed source portions, aka arm support, from the kernel).

3) Install the 10.6.2 update, but don't restart yet
4) Run the following commands
Code:
sudo cp /mach_kernel /mach_kernel_10_6_2
sudo cp /mach_kernel_10_6_1 /mach_kernel
5) reboot.

If you rebooted before you replaced the new kernel, you can type "mach_kernel_10_6_1" at the bootloader (no quotes), and it'll use the kernel you backed up.

Finally, run NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 RC3 from a normal boot, not safe mode (bug, doesn't generate the mkexts correctly) so that you use the new extensions / GMA950 drivers / etc.

NOTE: There *may* be stability issues while running on the old kernel, I haven't run into any (running it for about a week), but you never know.

Hi,

I get an error message when I try the above, suggesting that my usage of the command is wrong. Can you confirm that the above commands are correct?

Thanks

Wait, I may have left a space out. I'll try it again. Sorry!

What sort of error are you getting (and the commands work for me, just double checked).

You can copy / paste each line and it should work.

Yeah, I definitely left a space out between the two / commands.
My bad!

Downloading 10.6.2 now, we'll see how it goes.
