The Apple internal DVD Player WORKS fine with External Drive subject to a little fix: First go to Hardmac.com : Le "Macbidouille" in English - News for Friday, 19 December 2008 and take a look at the English translation of original French directions. Jolter noted this in another thread and posted it, noting success with the fix. Others reported problems, but a few tweaks should fix it for all interested parties. To get the internal DVD Player to work with an outboard drive, first make the file fix with a free, downloadable HexEditor (I found HexEditor 1.4 with Google; works fine) as noted in hardmac.com (you'll find there are more like 6 iterations of "Internal" that need to be changed to "External" rather than 4 as stated in the article), save, and then Repair Permissions (critical). You'll see lots of activity on screen when the repair gets to the DVD files. Once done, restart, and then set System Preferences --> CDs & DVDs to open the DVD Player when a DVD is inserted into the drive. It should work bomb-diggity! I'm using a Samsung SE-T048M slot loading drive (a new model, very nice). Originally, I couldn't get it to work at all, even with VLC! I found a post where, in frustration, someone attached their stubborn/persnickety new drive to a Windows computer and reset the Region number under the drive Components (can't do that with a Mac, apparently). When I got into the drive settings, it appeared the Region was already set to "1"; I set it again to "1" and saved. There is a caution that the drive has only 5 Region changes before the drive locks-up forever; resetting "1" with "1" did not reduce my remaining balance of Region changes, but for some strange reason it did fix the drive to work with VLC, and now DVD Player. My DM-10V and Samsung drive are getting along just fine with the built-in DVD Player. Really nice! [ Dan-O-Cam : http://smith.soehd.csufresno.edu/ ] |

Does your DVD player need to be connected via USB for DVD app to open, or will you get an initialization error? Reason I ask is I have done the Hex Editor mod, but am waiting for a USB adaptor to arrive before I can connect my external drive.
