I acutally watch DVD rips from VLC on my roadtrips and mp4 videos often. The only player I use is VLC, except those odd times that Quicktime comes up and I don't feel like switching. http://osx.mechdrew.com - News and Guides for Installing Mac OS X via NetbookInstaller - Now on Twitter |

I don't use OSX, but from what I've read, Quartz and/or Quartz Extreme should be options. If there's something labeled "overlay", that's worth a try too.
