Default Yet another mirroring question - 10-03-2009, 02:57 PM

Hi,

I am pretty much a newbie to the osx mini world. my problem is that I need to get my powerpoint onto a screen in class. I have read and followed the directions on some of the posts here. so far I have managed to get the extended screen by using the mirror off command. then i even downloaded the mirror program from the fabian canas site but no success. Is there anyway to get my dell mini9 osx (10.5.7) to project from an lcd projector?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i often have to invoke the fabian program (MirrorDisplays) 3-4 times before the screen clears up on some projectors. don't give up because it doesn't work the first time.

Default about the mirror program - 10-03-2009, 07:29 PM

just exactly how do i use this program? I click on before or after plugging in the projector? if the screen gets wonky how do i toggle it on? yes i am dense

Just how exactly do I get power point to be seen on the screen? I have figured out how to get the dual screen with the mirror off command but how do I then get powerpoint to be seen on the screen? I can move my cursor and files between the screens but when i run power point it only displays on my mini's screen.

the key is to use 'spot light'. the hot key to bring up 'spot light' on the mini is [alt][space]. 1) store MirrorDisplays in Applications
2) type [alt][space] and enter as much of the name 'mirrordisplay' in the 'spot light' as necessary to find the application in 'spot light' in your top hit.
3) at this point each time you hit [alt][space] it should toggle the 'spot light' application with MirrorDisplays as your top hit.
4) if you are [enter] when 'spot light' is displayed, and the top hit is MirrorDisplays, then the application will be executed.

this is how you set it up. once you get that far then do this:

1) plug your projector in.
2) let the screen try to resize for 5-10 seconds.
3) hit [alt][space] then [enter]
4) repeat 4 as necessary for the screens to synchronize up.

remember [alt][space] will toggle 'spot light' so make sure you're hitting [enter] at the right time, although it does no harm in the process to just keep going [alt][space]-[enter] without keeping track of which [enter] goes to 'spot light' and which doesn't.

if it's not working unplug the projector and check to make sure the spot light setup is working as described.

this whole process is just a way of leveraging spot light as a temporary hot key you can hit when you're blind.

btw i only know this works on the mini 9, not any other dell's AFAIK

NetbookInstaller has a check box to install an old mirror friendly display driver. Select that, Install, then reboot. There aren't too many noticeable differences in graphics, and it will let you mirror the display. I did it all the time for presentations, then I would just go back and reinstall the extensions to revert to the new driver.
