I themed my Mini 9 a couple of months ago (gave it a black theme, so I used some white menu extras (airport, volume, display icons...) that are found in /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras...all was well until today.
(I've still got Leopard 10.5.6, DellEFI 1.2a5)
Today I decided to go back to the regular look. I restored the files I had backed up until I realized that I hadn't backed up the Menu Extras...they were still white and I wanted to restore them to their original black.
So, the idiot I am, I copied my Snow Leopard menu extras (figuring they were the same, guess I was wrong) to my Mini's Menu Extras folder. I also restored SArtFile.bin and ArtFile.bin (but I might've screwed that up too - those are the files that are responsible for all the theme elements in Mac OS X, they can be found at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreUI.framework/Versions/A/Resources)
Now I've got my desktop, the dock, the menubar that won't show and nothing (including the Finder, Sys Prefs, Disk Util, etc...) that will launch. I just get a spinning beachball.
I know I fudged this up for myself and I won't attempt anything like this again, but I need some help with one of the following things.
Is there a way to repalce the files I corrupted with the original ones to their respective folders using some kind of USB Linux distro that I can boot off of?
Or is there a way I can copy some files on a USB with a Linux distro? I've got a document on there I really have to salvage. My hard drive's not corrupted, just seems that I screwed with some files I shouldn't have (probably Menu Extras, maybe SArtFile.bin and ArtFile.bin)
I also can't reinstall Mac OS X (archive and install) at the moment since I misplaced my 8GB USB key and am stuck with a 4GB. Would that be an option too? Reinstalling Leopard using Archive and Install?
Please help me, I take notes with this computer in college and there's some documents on there I need. That's my priority at the moment, the system itself can be fixed I know, but it's just the documents I'm concerned about for now.
Feel free to lambast me for my idiocy. (preferably after a solution is given
Thanks for any help or reply
