If you are restoring to a USB key to do the install with, no. Run the NBM and select the USB key to install the NBI on to it. This makes it bootable.
This key is then used to install SL onto your SSD
. Once SL is finished installing, run the NBI from the Utilities option in the Finder Bar at the top of the screen. Once you have done this, your mini will boot without the key.
I kept mine for recovery. In case I screw something up, I can recover, or do a fresh install if I need to. It is a lot easier to take with you in a bag than a USB dvd drive, installer cd and a SL DVD. Less wear and tear on the SL disc too.
