Question Transitioning From DellEFI to NetbookInstaller - 09-01-2009, 10:42 PM

Hi gang,

I'm currently using DellEFI 1.2a5, but it looks like I'll need to make the move to NetbookInstaller eventually if I plan to run Snow Leopard on my Vostro. I was wondering how exactly to go about this. I posted a similar question elsewhere and was told to just run NetbookInstaller -- which I did, and wound up having to reinstall OS X from scratch as it resulted in a nasty crash.

I'm planning to backup my installation before I try this again, but wanted to know the best way to attack making the switch. Thanks!

I did not do a "switch" myself because I did a fresh install using NetbookInstaller / NetbookBootMaker .8.2 on my Mini 10v.

But, from what I can tell, you should simply do the following :

1. Boot into safe mode
2. Run NetbookInstaller .8.2
3. Reboot normally

Let me know if that works out for ya

Will do, thanks for the tip!

Actually. Scratch the regenerating of the dsdt.aml file... not sure why I threw that in there!!

I have given the same steps before... and do not know why that popped up this time!

I tried the transition by booting into safe mode and running NBI. After I rebooted, I got the same stuck on blue screen routine as when I upgraded to 10.5.7. Hopefully I can plug in an external monitor again and fix. It seems the video kext puts my display into external monitor mode for some odd reason.

Hopefully, the monitor trick works again and I can upgrade to 10.5.8.

So, if I understand this right, I boot into safe mode, run NBI with the default choices checked and DO NOT generate the dsdt.aml file, then reboot normally?

Yes.

Post back with your results, you should be golden!

And this method should work fine on a dual boot Mini 9 with Win 7 Beta (yeah, I know...waiting for retail version) and OSX 10.5.8 running DellEFI?

I'll be happy to post my results as well. After I backup my Mini...

According to meklort, this is the recommended procedure to take when upgrading from DellEFI to NetbookInstaller I consulted him on the procedure after I recommended it and he approved.

i just did this by booting into safe mode. Deleting the old .dellefi and Extra directories, then running netbook installer.

Worked fine for me. Had no reason to do it, just wanted to try it. lol

The one sucky part of netbook installer is it defaults to meklorts touchpad drivers. I like them, just not as much as i liked the default osx driver. oh well.

Anyone know how i can revert back to the original drivers while using netbook installer?
