Default Windows install without reformatting/reinstalling OSX? - 08-31-2009, 05:53 PM

I have a mini 10v on which I reformatted the HD and installed OS 1.5.7 (using mech drew's external HD/dell efi install method). For school, we are required to run Bootcamp if we have a Mac, as they want us to be able to run Windows (any version from XP onwards) because we'll be using some Office programs that aren't available for Mac. Using OSX-compatible, open-source versions of similar programs isn't an option, so I'm stuck having to emulate or install Windows. Do I :

- try to emulate Windows using Parallels (Will that even work on a Hackintosh? I know that Bootcamp doesn't. ) I'll be doing a lot of video conferencing, so this might be too 'laggy'.

- Or is there a way that, without re-formatting my hard drive, I can create a partition on which to install Windows?

Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated, too! e.g. booting Windows on an external hard drive - is that possible?

Thanks for the help!

mechdrew has a method on his site (osx.mechdrew.com) about how to back up your existing partition (you will need an external USB hard drive for this) which you can then restore into your multiboot system.

Note, I've been playing with all of the guides on building a multi-boot but have yet to maek it work. i'm in the middle of another try and am running from the Windows 7 partition as it finishes doing its updates. As soon as I'm done with that, I'll try to get the multi-boot to work. I did back up the OSX partition, repartitioned the drive as MBR and then restored (and had working with the Boot123 boot method), so I'm hopeful that this is going to work. But it's my third install of Windows 7 in the last two days.

still no joy in dual-boot land. See another post about what I've done and tried.
