Default Device Removal warning when waking from sleep - 08-17-2009, 06:16 PM

If I have a USB flash drive or HDD connected when my Mini 9 goes to sleep, I get a Device Removal warning when it wakes up, alerting me that the external volume was "not properly put away" and that "data may have been lost or damaged," despite the fact that the drive has remained connected the whole time.

I'm familiar with the need to properly dismount drives before they're actually removed, but shouldn't the OS handle this situation better? I don't recal my wife's Macbook Pro complaining under similar circumstances - is this just a byproduct of running OS X on hardware that wasn't built for it? Is there a workaround besides dismounting the drive before it sleeps?

Thinking of trying Dropbox? Use this referal link and we'll both get an extra 250MB of storage.

I've had the same thing on 2 different mini-9 without any ill effects. I've assume that the usb and wireless are little slow to wake up on the mini-9.

Thanks for confirming it's not just my unit. I'd be happier if I knew that OS X was smart enough to flush any external drives before it actually goes to sleep. Can anyone confirm that?

It is probably due to the fact that we disable USB Legacy support in the BIOS.

Not really the fault of the OS, more like a side effect of running it on non-supported equipment.

Yeah, I suspect it's a hardware issue, though I know it's not the Legacy USB BIOS setting - I have mine enabled (with Bluetooth disabled).

I wonder if there's a way to insert a slight delay when the OS wakes up, to give the hardware a chance to wake up first.

On a real Mac the USB slots aren't completely powered off when the computer sleeps like they (and card reader on our minis) are on the mini9/10.With power off the drive has to be unmounted, after all there is no power to keep it mounted. So the only fix is to have any USB drives get dismounted before3 going to sleep. There is a fix for this in the hardware thread mentioned in my sig on the PCIe SDHC card reader thread.

Hi bsoplinger1, I was not able to find it, sorry. How does that fix look like (for a Dell Mini 10v 1011)?

Thanks,
Bugs
