Default Del Mini 9 won't boot after 3 months of success - 07-10-2009, 10:25 PM

My Dell Mini 9, OS 10.5.6 Retail has run flawlessly for 3 months. Today after using the compter on line, I stopped. When I resumed use after about 20 min it had started to sleep, so I held down the start button till the Mini began to reboot. It then went through the Apple logo and showed the startup on the grey page. Then the error rectangle with:

You need to restart your coputer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the restart button.

But the same failed start up sequence occurs.

Do I need to reinstall?
Or is there another fix?

We are about to go on vacation and I wanted to take it along.

Try booting into safe mode.

Default how to safe mode boot when OSX screen is frozen - 07-11-2009, 01:11 AM

I'm very inept with Ubuntu.
Exactly when and how do I get into safe mode?

Do I type -x ? But where?

-x is safe mode, click F8 while starting up (after the dell and before the apple) and you'll get the Darwin prompt...

-x after that.

I'm very very new to this as well, and experienced similar problems to you. today, Broke and fixed

When all else fails, boot to your Thumb drive (with syslinux on it) and go through the original install boot procedure and reinstall all of your extensions.

That's what I had to do.

Super simple, just took me a few minutes to remember how to do it.

Good luck!!

To get into Safe Boot it depends on which version of DellEFI you are using:

DellEFI 1.1: just after you turn on the machine after the dell logo, you should see it count down: (3), (2), (1).. while it's counting, press any key. This will bring you to a command prompt your where you can type: -x (then press enter).. you should then boot into Safe Boot..

DellEFI 1.2a5: just hold shift while it is booting (it is easiest just to hold shift then hit the power button and continue to hold shift until you see the Safe Boot login screen).

Please keep in mind that Safe Boot can take a bit longer to load/boot as compared to a normal boot.

Good luck.
