Do the usual command+letter key combinations work? For instance, would I be able to press the windows key and "Q" to quit an application?

Yes. By default, the Windows key/alt key are reversed, but that's easy enough to fix in the keyboard pane of System Preferences. You encounter the same thing when using a PC keyboard on a real Mac.
