Default carefull with IE 8 - 06-24-2009, 01:54 AM

I just bought an inspiron mini 10 and did a full update (including IE 8). Imagine my surprise this morning when I got a file is missing or corrupt: hal.dll upon trying to boot up XP.

Apparently this happens sometimes and requires an XP repair. Since the inspirion mini 10 doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive this can be an issue. So be careful or buy a USB CD/DVD drive.

My solution was to both return the inspiron to best buy for a replacement AND buy a USB drive ($90).

I read about this on Reddit, for some reason it removes boot.ini, it can be fixed wit hthe repair console as you said.

More info: They outdid themselves

Next time, I would shop around a bit before purchasing an external drive. Newegg and Micro Center both have drives for around the $50-$60 mark. $90 is excessive, when you don't have to pay that much.
