Default Dell mini's with ION = OS X compatible? - 06-19-2009, 06:38 AM

I'm curious, I want to buy a mini to turn it into an OS X machine. Would this be possible on future iterations of the Dell mini line if they put ION chips in their netbooks?

I'd love to have a 10" with ION and OS X! Will ION even compatible with OS X? Or is the Mini 9, A90 my only option for a hastle free netbook OS X machine?

Too many "ifs" in there. What makes the Mini 9 and 10v hackintoshable is that they use many of the same components as the Apple Mini (in particular the 945G chipset). Since we already know that the Dell Minis that use the Intel "Poulsbo" chipset are NOT OS X compatible, it seems unlikely that the Nvidia Ion would be either, unless Apple adopts it for its own products.

The real answer is, though, "nobody knows". If or when such products appear, you can be sure it will be tested.

Ah, i'd heard that the ION platform is essential the 9400M. Doesn't apple already support that already?

From everything that I've read, even if the Ion isn't identical to the 9400M, it's close enough that I'm sure some enterprising driver hacker should be able to produce some usable kexts.

According to this article, I would be correct:

AnandTech: NVIDIA's Ion Platform: Bringing High Def to Netbooks

It says that the ION platform graphics chip is the same as the 9400M

So does the nVidia ION section of their website.

Lest we forget, the 9400M is the main graphics employed in the current Mac Mini, MacBook , iMac, & MacBook Pro computers today. It seems to me the ION graphics would be the MOST Apple-friendly hardware in any future Hackintoshed Netbook.

I would be very interested to hear or read if the Lenovo IdeaPad S12 (supposedly the first Netbook out with the ION technology) is Hackintoshable.

i looked at one of the lennovos, think it was the s10, and really liked it a lot! checked it out at frys, and damn near bought one on the spot. when i came home and looked around at feasibility of hackintosh, it's doable, but what a pain in the ass compared to the mini 10! seriously. like 20 reboots later, and i'm way too add for that. i would totally forget where i was, even with notes.

the mini 10 seems much more straight forward, plus we got some really smart folks here in case i need help. i can't imagine the s12 would be much more different, but i haven't looked into it, as i'm really wanting into the 10" form factor.

the s10 has a fantastic keyboard, though, and the overall build quality really apealed to me, so i can only imagine what the s12 would be like with the better graphics.
