I saw this and was immediately interested.
I still have to build up the $ but I was considering getting one to play with and perhaps use as a small file/print server.

I'd just assume build a shuttle system. I use to have one built into my A4 that I built but eventually the drive got fried and i just took it out.

You can build a shuttle for that price and have higher performance. Looks tacky too.

Shuttle eh? Okay I'll look into 'em.
I see the name around but haven't looked into them directly, thanks!

I kind of dig the Atom for some reason. Maybe it's the name, kinda 50's retro, as well as the fact that it isn't all that bad for what it's intended for.
Perhaps that MB in a case that isn't to restrictive and yes, perhaps a bit more aesthetically pleasing as well.

If you are into building your own system(which honestly takes no skill if you can do the things you've said you've done...) then making a shuttle is a great way to get a decent system, that is still portable(I use to use one for lan parties.... WAY back in the day). newegg.com should even have some prebuilt systems.

They are often called a lanbox too. I am not sure you will find many that small, though I can't tell exactly what the size is.

Based on the price, you prob won't build a standard shuttle for less, so it would be tempting.

I've used a Shuttle XPC box for a file/print server for a long time now. Great little machines!

Once set up, I tend to go into BIOS and underclock them and turn the fans waaaay down. Makes them virtually silent - and compared to some desktop systems, they sip power instead of drinking it down.

No need for a burly CPU when all it's doing is providing Samba shares and print services.

Interesting link on eBay - let us know what you decide / what you're up to with the new box!

Have you thought about an eeePC box (also at newegg.com)? They're Atom based, small, fairly cheap, quiet. I had an eeePC netbook and had good luck with it. (It is now serving a friend well; I sold it when I bought the Mini 9).

What you can get for roughtly the same price-

Dual Core Atom MB $79.99
Cheap 2 gig Transcend RAM $19.99
ITX Case w/ 250 watt PS $55.99
640G 3.5" SATA HDD $69.99

Total- $225.96 before shipping.

of course, the case is bigger, but has room for a disc drive,or you can add a card reader if you want like the case in the ebay item. Altho,if you are considering buying something like this, you might want to look at 2.5" HDDs instead, since it would help with making room in the small case.

Oh wow, I knew you could come up with a good setup for that price. Since you like the atom, why not go dual core with this!!!

Good work teeth

before I got the mini,I was considering getting one of those setups for a mini server. I was going to get a CF to IDE adapter and boot the OS off a CF card and free up the 2 SATA ports for Storage.

I decided however, that when the price of some of Intel's quad cores goes down,I will get one and swap out my current E8400 into a server that has a little more umph.
