Default VPN / Hamachi - 06-11-2009, 03:18 PM

Does anyone use any VPN setup with their mini? Looking for some sort of free vpn solution for when browsing on public wifi.

I used hamachi many moons ago, wondering if the service still holds up or if there is a better option out now?

Thanks
Zach

Same with DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT600N gateway router...just wish the DD-WRT Devs would upgrade to latest OpenVPN RC18 since the included DD-WRT VPN build is still only RC16!

Depends on your skill level and type of wireless router you currently are running.

OpenWrt / WRT600N/WRT610N status

In my case, OpenWRT support for Linksys WRT610N isn't quite there yet whereas both WRT600N/610N are now supported by DD-WRT!

DD-WRT :: Supported Hardware

You can easily check if your wireless router brand is supported under DD-WRT using above Router-Database link...

I use PersonalVPN. It is a hosted service. DD-WRT doesn't run on my router.

In a nutshell, yes.

Once the OpenVPN client installed on the netbook connects with OpenVPN server installed onto firmware of your gateway router it treats the remote client as being part of the local LAN allowing file sharing, ect. as well as encrypting all data either wired or wireless all the way back to your gateway router. This is great for securing your data while using your netbook at a public hotspot and being able to bypass proxy servers and port filtering is an added bonus as well as the opensource DD-WRT firmware and OpenVPN client being free!

If you don't want to or can't run the VPN server yourself, there are several services that will do it for a fee.

PersonalVPN looks very cool and affordable. It definitely takes the complexity out of the equation. But if you've used OpenVPN before and are familiar with how to deploy it I still think it's better that you configure your own gateway. In my case all of my traffic between netbook and home is encrypted. In the PersonalVPN case, from netbook to gateway is encrypted but gateway to home is in the clear. Does a little bit more for my peace of mind, but I guess I'm a security nut.
