Default Dare I ask for OTHER netbook recommendations? - 05-29-2009, 12:13 AM

My friend saw my Mini 9, loved its compact size and wanted to get one.

But, being the biased Mini 9 lover that I am, I could offer no other alternatives besides the Mini 9.

So far, he's looking to use the netbook for the following:
-web browsing
-light word processing
-youtube viewing
-he does not plan on doing any modding since he's not that tech savvy. i rather not do it because i don't want to be liable for other peoples' hardware >.<

I advised him to get:
-atom processor (none of that intel mobile celeron junk)
-at least 8gb drive
-at least 1 gb ram

Would he hackintosh? No he said.

He asked me, what's the difference between SSD and regular hard drives? I said SSD is faster and there's no fan.

He then asked me, is the speed that much faster? I did not know the answer.

I know ASUS makes netbooks with 160 gb HD, but I do not know how they are in terms of speed. If anyone can share some experience on other netbooks that do not use SSD, please let me know!

Most of the netbooks have similar processors, so speed is not too different. The Asus 1000HE is getting good reviews from buyers and it has excellent battery life.

If i didnt get the Dell Mini.....i would have probably gotten the MSI Wind U1xx series...

I initially bought a Asus EeePC.....i found the build quality to be cheap feeling though.

The wind was a step up....the Dell is probably the best imo...very sturdy...and best of all...silent!

eeepc 901. we have both in our house (901 and Mini9) the 901 is better is almost all respects, except the keyboard. The Mini9 keyboard is better. But that's it.

Have the 9 and a Lenovo at home. The Lenovo wins for its keyboard, but loses on every other aspect. A mate has an NC10 and it's very nice. If I wasn't hackintoshing then that would probably have been my first choice, but not by much.

I traded my eee900ha for a dell mini 9 specifically because:
1. the 900ha has a 160gb hard drive, which is noisy and requires a fan
2. better keyboard on the dell

Another vote for the Samsung NC10, especially if he wants it out of the box stock. I have the SE version, extended battery. If the mini wasn't so cool to hack, the Sammy would be my laptop replacement and used all the time. The keyboard is the shiznit for usability, quality is superb, and the matt screen kicks butt. Some have complained of the small touchpad (it's a bit larger in the SE version), but if you just set it up right, it works fine. I might eventually get bored with screwing with the mini, but I'm keeping the NC till it dies.
