Default Any Dell desktops good hackintoshes? - 05-22-2009, 03:32 PM

I have been so thrilled with how my Mini 9 runs OS X and impressed with the community attitude and skill set here it has made me wonder if any of the inexpensive Dell desktops are good hackintosh candidates.

I know there are some lists out there, but thought the community here might be able to answer quickly and offer suggestions if I have any other questions.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hell, if you want inexpensive, just buy a Mac Mini.

I'd be interested in seeing a list of compatible desktops.

As for the Mini, it's $600 for 2Ghz dual core with 9400M graphics. For $450, you can get a quad core Q8200 tower system. Add $90 for a ATI 4850 and you would have a system that runs rings around the Mini.

Yes, but the thing is, there is no "standard equipment" between Dell desktops. You just have to do your research on what hardware and chipsets are compatible with OSx.

Wasn't that the OP's question? Are there any known good configs for the various good desktop models?

Like that Inspiron 530 that I was talking about, it uses a G33 chipset while the Inspiron 537 uses the G41 chipset. Are either known to be compatible with OSX?

You need to identify the components used in Apple Macs and then look for a PC that uses the same chipset and supporting components. It's not simple, and even then may not be successful. I suggest reading about those who have done "hackintoshes" on generic PCs to see what's required. Dell may or may not have models that will work. The reason the Atom-powered netbooks tend to work is that they share components with the Mac Mini.

I have heard of some success with the Dell Hybrid.
