US-CERT page has succinct info, has links to sites for conficker removal.

Would have responded sooner, but came down with a severe case of Y2K.

I wrote on another forum that this Conficker thing reminded me of Y2K all over again.

However, the upside to all of this is hopefully more people are patched and updated their AV.

This is far from old news, unless you're a non-Windows user.

I don't know why people are reminded of Y2K. Y2K was all hype. Conficker is real, has infected millions of machines and still is. Pretending that a worm isn't there or comparing it to something that's not even close to being related to a worm is a bit ridiculous. Maybe its because of ignorance? I imagine I'd think the same if I didn't see it happening every day (I work for a large ISP/MSSP that monitors for malware). The worm is quite nasty and is more related to Slammer/Blaster than Y2K.

What complicates things are:

1. Many people in the world don't have access to broadband and can't dowload the large upgrades and patches that Windows machines sometimes require.

2. Bootleg copies of Windows usually forgo patching and won't normally be allowed to be patched by Microsoft.

3. The average Windows user is not security-savvy and may not know the importance of keeping their systems up-to-date.

I could go on, but the above should more than suffice as examples of the difficulty in ensuring the majority of users are aware and patched for Conficker.

But really, it comes down to things such as not allowing SMB over the internet or inbound from the internet to your home machine, turning off unneeded services, not clicking on strange or obscure URLs (in e-mails or otherwise)...this is all user-controllable stuff that should be done ON TOP OF patching the OS and any apps.

When I said old news, I was referring to OSX. The smilies were the tip off.

As far as how you interpreted it, it's still old news. MS put out a patch several months ago.

Y2K is easy to call hype in retrospect. I was on call that night. When our east coast data centers checked out I was able to put away my cell and Moto pager since I was in Silicon Valley. Conficker is similar as no big bomb went off on 4/1 as predicted.

Guess you didn't notice I'm the OP and posted links either.
