Had that exact same box! was the first machine i purchased with my own money, before that it was the parents' Apple IIe and later a IIgs and then a Mac Performa 6115. But the Dell was my big purchase, and I spent about $2000 on it! with a 17" crt monitor. I think the model was Dimension D400 or something.

That was in the days when Dell mean QUALITY. You could call, speak to a real English speaking person, and customize EVERY component in every build. And the reps were actually knowledgeable about computers, and about their products.

In those days, you either bought a commodity PC at a big-box store, a generic home-built from a discount mail order seller like TigerDirect (don't think you could even order from them online yet), or you could get a good quality built-to-order. The choices for those were Dell, Micron, and NEC. I think Micron were most expensive, and considered best, and Dell was second.

Anyway I digress. I've owned a long string of Dell everything since then, and have had decent luck w/ their hardware despite its general march towards crappiness. I like that they are so common you can buy parts on ebay easily at any time.

But, I'm moving away from them. Since my experience with them and my Vostro A90 order, and some friends' recent experiences, I'm just not going to give them much money from now on. Dell, you have driven away a good long term customer.

I'm the proud owner of:

1. DELL Studio XPS 435MT (Intel Core i7-920 processor (2.66GHz),
8GB RAM, 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850, 750GB HD, Vista 64-bit Home Premium, 16X DVD+/-RW drive, X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCIe card, that I will use with one of my two DELL 24" 2408 WFP displays. The other display goes with Mac Pro system I hope to get soon.

Mmmm Quad core ...

and

2. DELL Dimension E521 (AMD Athlon 64 X2 DC 3800+ (2.00 GHz),
1 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 6600, 150 GB HD, XP Pro system (for my mother)

Soon, a Mini will be mine ... like hopefully the 10v if OS X will install as easily as it did / does on the Mini 9.

Default Dell Stuff - 05-25-2009, 10:23 AM

My desktop is a XPS 420, 3.0 Duo Core with Nvidia 8800 GT card, 24" monitor, Black Mini 10 which is running Vista and runs well with Vista and a White Mini 9 running Ubuntu Netbook, selling mini 9 and will probably sell the Mini 10 and get a 10V, if they perform like the Mini 9 and be able to upgrade ram. Overall I have been well satisfied with Dell's products, I have owned a bunch of them over the years and have had very few problems and you can't beat the Outlet prices. Also a Dell Axim 51V which has been somewhat retired since I bought my first Mini.

little off topic here but....he complains about that machine....my first was a machine with 2 5 1/4" drives (the OS went in one of them), NO hard drive and 640 kb of RAM.......did upgrade to a 10 mb hard drive and thought I was the king of the neighborhood (lol)....back then mainframes took up an entire large room..it got so hot in there you could walk around in shorts

PS. my pc did actually have a color monitor though

I kinda wish I still had it...I would sell it to the Smithsonian or something
