Default Hotmail on Evolution - 03-05-2009, 10:33 PM

I didn't see any help on Hotmail using evolution, so I figured I'd show ya'll what worked if you use hotmail. I know a lot of people prefer thunderbird, but eh.

Into Evolution, create a new account (Edit, Preferences, Add)
Fill in the boxes on that page for Receiving Email
For Server Type---------------------- select POP
For Server---------------------------- type in pop3.live.com
For Username------------------------- put your hotmail address (username@hotmail.com)
Use Secure Connection--------------- SSL encryption
For Authentication Type------------- Choose "Password" and check the "Remember Password" box

on Receiving Options, thats up to you. I leave it to check every 5 minutes, and I don't leave messages on server

On the Sending Email section...
For Server-------------------------- type in smtp.live.com
Be sure "Server requires authentication" is selected
For Use Secure Connection------- Choose TLS
For authentication type------------Choose Plain
type in your hotmail user name (username@hotmail.com)
Select "Remember Password"

For the name of the account, make it whatever you want
Select apply, and hit Send/Receive

Yay! you've got hotmail set up!
If you're email is username@live.com, i'm sure you can substitute the word "hotmail" for "live"
As a bonus, Windows Live gives every user 25GB of free online storage

I just got this to work on my Thunderbird! Thanks! No more annoying hotmail email stuff <.< I just wish it was IMAP instead of POP3

Great post. Question though, where do I enter my password? It never asks for one. The send receive just fails.

**Never mind, I'm an idiot

Thanks

Retropyor,
Thanks for the post. It seems consistent with all the other information I've been able to find on importing Hotmail into Evolution. However, even with the settings you describe, my new miniDell10v with Ubuntu 8.04 still does not work with Evolution and Hotmail. I can receive hotmail normally, but the send function does not work. It just times out. There must be something I'm missing. Any suggestions?

smtp.live.com:587 works for me. Port 25 doesn't. So just add :587 to end of smtp server.
