Default Saving the SSD - 02-28-2009, 03:46 AM

Just got my Mini9 with the 8GB SSD. hdparm -i shows :

Model = STEC PATA 8GB, FwRev=D5221-10

is that what other people with 8GB SSD have?

I thought I'd do some benchmarks to see if it degrades over time:
hdparm -tT /dev/sda
Timing cached reads: 1194 MB in 2.00 seconds = 597.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 158 MB in 3.01 seconds = 52.41 MB/sec

I did a couple of tweaks to save wear and tear on the system. First, remount the / filesystem with the 'noatime' parameter, like this line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/sda2 / ext3 noatime 0 0

Second, make a small RAM-based FS for /var/log
tmpfs /var/log tmpfs rw,size=20m 0 0

The last line make a 20MB non-expandable ramdrive for /var/log, which will get wiped on reboot. This way any logging stuff doesnt chatter away at the SSD.

Anyone else have any tweaks for bloat removal and system optimizing?
