Default Flip open your mini - 02-23-2009, 09:44 PM

What’s your technique to flip open your mini? I’m always struggling with nothing to grab.

I'm a one hand over and one hand under kind of guy. A little like grabbing a football. Having the Zagg sheild provides just enough edge for my thumb to catch the cover.

When I pull it out of it's case, I open it like a book with both hands and then set it down.

But yeah, it's kind of strange. The base doesn't haven enough weight to open it like a typical laptop.

I usually have my mini on a desk/table, then try to wedge my fingertips between the lid and base. It does take some working, and trying to be careful not to slip and damage it makes it a pain. My Inspiron 6000 has a sliding lock, but once that's opened, the lid opens a lot easier...but then, as Wolfkeeper notes, the base is a bit heavier.

Hahahah. I'm glad to read that I have not been alone in this subject.

I guess it's too soon to know, but I have a concern about how tight the mini closes. I had a Sony Vaio 15" with a glossy screen. I noticed that over time, with the power off, I could see the faint outline of all the keys. Those "ghosts" were not noticeable when powered on, but it still bugged me. The lid may have just been heavy as this was 4 years ago and the whole thing seemed to weigh a ton!

As far as opening, I try to lift the lid open by wedging both thumbs from both sides at the same time.

First, I would replace the word "flip" with "pry", as flipping the lid would also mean the base is mostly likely going with it; thus moving into the next of at least one of the followings motions: fly, flop, tumble, fall, etc., etc.

With the base sitting on a surface, I use my left fingers to push against the base downward while at the same time using my right thumb to left up the lid. Generally this is a slow diliberate action using most of my feeble brain so as not to go into a "flip" mode described above. I am right handed, lefties may reverse the support/lift action if so desired.

When held in just my hands, I use both thumbs with my fingers of my hands spread over the lid (right hand) and base (left hand) respectively. Again slow and deliberate with the same amount of mental energy used in doing it right as above.

I find closing it much easier and requires much less mental planning.

I keep my Mini in it's carrying case. The case has retaining straps on the screen and on the keyboard so I use the hand straps of the case to open the Mini. It works very well that way.
