Default I've got an iTunes disaster - 02-19-2009, 08:52 AM

So my old laptop died TWO HOURS BEFORE my new mini showed up at my door.

I didn't have a backup of my iTunes library on an external hard drive, just my iPhone, so now I'm trying to figure out how to make this work and get my music onto my new mini.

I know there are programs like CopyPod that will let you move your library from an ipod or iphone to a computer, but these programs seem to be made to work with windows only. Well, I bought this mini to use Mac OS dammit! So here's what I'm thinking. Please tell me this will work...

With my current XP based Dell mini...
Install iTunes to SSD.
Create my iTunes library on my SDHC.
Download CopyPod.
Copy the music files from the iphone to the iTunes library (SDHC).
Remove the SDHC.
Install Mac OS X
Install iTunes
specify same SDHC drive as library destination
Insert SDHC with library on it into Dell Mini rocking Mac OS.
Enjoy my music.
Laugh at Fate.

What do you think?

Sounds like the only option to me unless you have a friend w/ Windows that you can do the recovery on.

And what do you mean your old laptop died? It won't turn on? The hard drive is clicking?

You could try asking iTunes for help before you go to all the hassle. I had the same exact problem about a year ago, except my old laptop died the day before my new one arrived, not two hours. I had just finished backing up pictures and documents but hadn't gotten to the music yet. Since I didn't have an MP3 player at the time, I emailed iTunes help and they were really nice about it. They let me re-download my entire collection for free. They did warn me that they would only do that once and that I should make sure to keep backups in the future, but it solved the immediate problem! Now I have an automatic backup scheduled twice a week, so any losses resulting from unexpected computer failures should be minimal.

Good luck! I hope you're able to save everything!

Does iTunes really have a record of all my music files? Not just the ones I downloaded directly from them?
I mean, it would be cool if they did, especially if they'd let me download them all again to my new computer... seems a little Big Brother-ish though,

Anywho, barring a successful call to iTunes, I wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any problems with the formatting or swapping of the SDHC library between a PC and my new "Mac" mini 9.

Thanks for the advice.

Or should I just use Senuti once I install Mac OS?
Anyone have experience with this product?

I highly doubt they have a record of all of your music files, but they would definitely have a record of everything you purchased from them. From the OP, it seemed like the problem was just with your iTunes library.

My bad. ops:

iTunes does not let you re-download songs you have purchased. Backup is your responsibility.

Actually, they did let me re-download my purchases last year. However, I was warned that it would be a one-time concession and that they would put a note on my account.

Obviously, I can't say what the iTunes help desk staff would do in this specific case. However, it does not hurt to ask. The worst they can say is no, and the OP goes with the original plan instead.

Apple let my sister and her kids re-download their libraries after housefire.
