Unhappy Medion Akoya mini netbook - 10-18-2008, 10:04 PM

Whilst shopping in Morrisons today I spotted a shelf full of Medion E1210 netbooks on sale priced at ÂŁ299. (Although some quick research shows that it is available directly from Medion for ÂŁ279)

I personally have never before come across a Medion product - or at least one that I was aware of / noticed - and question the price of the product as it seemed a little high to even consider purchasing.

Does anyone own / used one of Medions other products?
What's the build quality like from this manufacturer?
Would anyone consider for a second about buying one of these?

Here's a run down of the specification on offer:
  • Intel® Atom™ N270 Processor (1.60Ghz, 512KB L2 Vache, 533 MHz FSB)[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • Windows® XP Home Edition (includes SP3/OEM version)[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • 10” TFT widescreen display (1024 x 600)[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • 1 GB DDR2 RAM[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • 80 GB Hard Drive[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • High Bandwidth Draft-n Wireless LAN – (IEEE-802.11, up to 300 Mb/s. transfer).[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • Stereo loudspeakers[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • Integrated Webcam and Microphone.[/*:m:4nih003f]
  • Software – Corel®, WordPerfect®, Office X3[/*:m:4nih003f]

Looks an awful lot like the dell mini.... just bigger, minus speakers on screen. uses same hinges, etc. Not identical by any means...

I didnt buy this model because i hate the massive waste of plastic surrounding the monitor, it makes the netbook look really cheap.

It is basically a re-badged MSI wind (minus the bluetooth in the UK but supplied in Oz when they go on sale this week)

In many countries (including the UK) Medion sell via Aldi supermarkets.

I have purchased many Medion computers over the years (not all for personal use) and haven't had any real problems to speak of regarding reliability or build quality. I had an issue with one series with the aspect ratio of recorded TV shows when displayed with the supplied third party software.

In Australia the products are normally sold with a 2 or 3 year warranty and a 90 day satisfaction warranty (ie return it for a full refund within 90 days if you are not happy) and from what the store managers I have spoken to have said not many get returned.

Personally, I wouldn't buy one here in Australia because they are being offered at exactly the same price as the Dell Mini and for me I want the lower weight of the Dell (about 200g lighter) and so will forgo the extra 1" of screen real estate and I want an SSD more than a hard drive so will settle for 16GB instead of 160GB. It all comes down to what you want though doesn't it
