Default Mini 1012 will not boot from dvd ot thumb drive - 03-20-2011, 12:04 AM

I'm trying to install a new HD but it will not load from either a DVD or a thumb drive, gives errors that a multimedia cable is not hooked up and no operating system, when I put the old HD in it works fine. I did go into bios and set the boot order to dvd or thumb drive when trying to get it to work, I made my bach on the td and dvd from the back up portion in windows. I did do an upgrade to W 7 Home Premium and never did make a back up of the W7 Starter, is that my problem?
Thanks,
LeeU

Is "Legacy USB" enabled in the BIOS? Make sure it is.

I read about Legacy USB before I asked my question but I did not see it any where, where in the Bios is it located?
Thank You,
LeeU

I don't know the 1012. Just cycle through the pages until you find it. May be on the Boot page.

Does the BIOS show the new drive ok? Don't have other ideas right now.

Yes it shows the drive fine, wondering if the drive is bad, brand new Intel X25 120 GB SSD.

That would not prevent a USB or CD from booting. I assume these boot ok on some other PC?

I just tried another drive I had laying around, a new 7200RPM 320 gb, it has the same problem so it is not th drives, it has got to be the Dell restore software, as I have burned it onto DVDs twice, reformatted and copied it on my thumb drive 3 times with no success. I may try to clone a drive instead.
