VLC's primary task is video playback. VLC originally stood for Video LAN Client, now I think it just means "VLC" . I'm surprised people recommend it for music.

I have used Winamp for years. It has never let me down, even running on my mini9.

The only problem I have with VLC is it's hard to create playlists, or maybe i'm just doing it wrong. When I'm on my Windows partition I use Mediamonkey, and when I'm on OS X I use iTunes or Quicktime (neither of which lag for me, maybe it's because I have 2gb ram??). Someone else said winamp, that's also a great option.

Coolplayer is extremely low resource using. Great for a netbook. I'm surprised nobody mentioned it yet. Winamp is so classic and tailored for MP3s. VLC is absolutely amazing for running anything, but of course uses more CPU.
