Question Setting up GPS? - 12-24-2010, 11:51 PM

Hi, newbie here.

Just got my Dell mini 1012, supposedly with the integrated GPS. Well, it doesn't seem to be "activated". I keep getting a balloon message saying, "Dell wireless location and GPS service is not started".

What should I do? Anyone with any experience with this?

MANY THANKS!
Lynn

"service not started" indicates a windows message, windows starts several processes/services when it boots, there can be many reasons for a process/service not to start...I dont have GPS but is there an option in the BIOS for it to be enabled?...also if you go into device manager in windows and look at the GPS, is it there? or is there a yellow triangle?..is there a dell utility to turn it on like with bluetooth and wifi there is a radio switch utility that you need to turn on/enable..maybe its the same with GPS

Thank you (again!) for the reply. I really appreciate it!

YIKES,though - your suggestions are beyond my scope of understanding... will have to ask dear husband for help!

But thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to reply!

Lynn, I suggest you contact Dell for help with this. They'll know about the hardware and software they provided, and as your unit is new it is still under warranty. It does sound as if some Dell-specific software is either not installed or not working properly.

I think the first thing I'd try is to download and install the Dell software for the GPS module. There are two, driver and application. Install these both, in that order, and see if that helps.
