Default An external hard drive or an external dvd writer? - 07-19-2010, 11:41 AM

Hi Dell Mini community,

I bought my Dell Mini 10v a week ago but I started reading forums two months ago or so. Thanks for encoureging me to buy a Dell Mini. I really want to install Mac OS X right now but I need a media to install it. So here is the question: I can't decide which one is best for buying: a) An external hard drive (~100$) b) an external slim dvd writer (~70$) or c) just an 8gb flash drive (~40$)...

Which one would you prefer?

the DVD would be the best choice...the flashdrive is also a good idea to have just to carry with you....I wouldnt buy an external hard drive, just do like I did and pop in an internal 640gb drive...

PS. Welcome to the forum.....

I have an external DVD drive and the only time I ever use it is when I'm installing an OS on a mini! I'm also the only one of my colleagues with one so it often gets lent out

I would get a beefy USB stick, 8GB maybe? Don't get anything too gimmicky as they tend to rip out of the housing from my experience.

why not buy both? they're just external, it's not as if u're restricted to space.. as for a flash drive, why not get a sd card?

because of the budget I have another option too: a cheaper solution for dvd. I think I'm going to buy an internal dvd writer and a sata to usb cable to use it...

the reason I suggested a flashdrive as opposed to an SD card is that a lot of older devices will not recognize the SDHC newer type cards, I ran into this with my desktop and older laptop that will not read the newer cards, the USB flashdrive will work on anything...and is about the same price...

BTW, an 8GB usb thumb drive from a major maker should run you +/-$20 on Amazon.
