Default New to Mini, not to Dell - 06-13-2010, 02:56 PM

I've recently purchased my first Netbook and am waiting for it to arrive. ($228 Wal-Mart Dell Mini 1012). Sure it is just the base model, but it will just be used for web-surfing and taking places to use public wifi. As you can see in my signature, I'm no newbie to Dell and have actually owned about 3 other Dell machines in the past.

Can't wait to get my hands on mine when it arrives next week and look forward to contributing here. My plans with my 1012 will be to upgrade the memory to 2GB and install some flavor of Linux along side Windows 7.

Hopefully, I can help answer more questions than I ask.

My current town and hometown is the hometown of Dell, so the rule is that someone in your family has to work for Dell as some point in their life. For me that is my brother (10 years before being laid off) and my cousin (18 months)

Just thought I'd say hello.

I guess I was wrong, my first Dell Mini was called the Latitude X1. A great little machine I had about 6 years ago that all my friends drooled over. Now it is common place...I guess it was just a little ahead of its time and too expensive. (Although I got mine free...don't ask).

Actually Dell employees don't get really good deals. My brother still has contacts, they each get a 15% systems discount every quarter. So, the Wal-Mart version I bought is $299 at Dell - 15% = $254+tax.

Now, I did appreciate the 19% Verizon wirless discount I got while my brother was employed by Dell. My cousin no longer works there either.

So the 1010 has the memory soldered onto the mother board? Is that the reason you need a daughter card? I have no problem with tearing into a laptop, but soldering on such a small board isn't good for my shaky hands

yeah thats the reason, unlike the 1011, the 1010 is soldered....my 1010 is so maxed out all it needs is the 2gb....I spent like $425 + tax + overnight shipping came to like $498, which was no big deal to me, I just need that daughter board now, one day on the online support I actually got one guy to sell it to me, the part was in the refurb dept. and he would have to get permission to sell it, but then he told me it would be $554.....the conversation basically ended right there....,I know they must be cheaper...money isnt really an issue but to an extent....I would probably pay a couple hundred but $554 is ludicrious.......oh well.....

PS. I also was wondering if I ever found the board could I find one with either the z540 or the z550 chip on it instead of the z530, dont get me wrong I would take one with the z530 but NOT one with the z520

You may want to email a local company here in Austin. They buy a lot of used Dell parts and returns from Dell that don't get sold on the outlet site. They helped my find a power supply board for an Inspiron for my boss' son's laptop after he tripped over the cord and it wouldn't charge.

Although not on their website or on display in the store, they found one for me for $15. Not saying that they will have it, but it is worth a try. I've bought many parts from them for previous Dell machines. Sometimes they've had to go in the back to find it for me and make up a price, but they were always very helpful.
