Default SDD with USB Port ?? - 12-24-2008, 01:47 PM

Hello again,..

I'm a little bit confused now....
Just saw the video on MDD, where they built in a SSD in a Mini 9
http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/SPD/ru ... 564080.jsp

This SSD has a USB Port.....but at the end of the page is listed in red:

* Unlike the Asus PCI-E SSD This drive does not include the Master Micro USB port. Through no fault of RunCore Dell decided not to put a USB bus on the PCI-E Slot.

Maybe a language issue (i'm from germany)

So what is true ??
Did the MDD'S RunCore SSD's for the mIni 9 have a USB Port or not ????
Because a USB POrt on the SSD is a great benefit..

TIA
jean

I don't have a Runcore myself, so someone else will no doubt confirm this, but I believe the USB connector on the Runcore allows you to hook the Runcore up through USB outside the Mini. This would enable you to move/copy/restore data from the Dell SSD to the Runcore without re-installing the OS. What that Master socket refers to is the possibility to hook other USB devices to the Runcore, thus acting as a USB hub. This is not possible in the Dell as the USB pins on the SSD are not hooked up. I hope that makes sense (and is correct ).

Yes, that is correct. On the Dell version, the USB port on the RunCore drive is a slave port only. It cannot serve as a bus master for other devices.

Does that mean that, if I had two (2) RunCore SSDs on a tabletop, I could not do a
bit-for-bit copy, one to the other, with a computer having two USB ports?

thanks, L

No, it doesn't mean that. All it means is that, when mounted inside the Mini, the USB port cannot be used for another USB devic or hub.

Connected externally by the USB port, it will look like a USB hard disk. You can have as many of these as you like.
