Default KIngston DataTraveler 100 2gig w/MBR? - 12-20-2008, 07:55 AM

Earlier this evening I picked up a 2gig Kingston Data Traveler 100 from Wal-Mart for $5. I finally got it home and was going to start building a bootable flash drive from the re-installation cd that came with my Mini-9. When I plugged it in for the first time it wasn't in the list of removable devices. I hunted it down and found it but it still was not showing as it should have. I rebooted my desktop and re-inserted the flash drive....lo and behold, there it was. It had been formatted with a FAT file system and included a MBR. Is this normal? I usually format to NTFS so the drive is more secure with files and whatnot. Basically I was going to erase it anyway so that the build could happen but I will hold off for a bit until I hear from some of you and what you think about all this.

It's absolutely normal for flash drives to come formatted as FAT32. I'm uncertain about the significance of the MBR.

~scratches chin~ Perhaps thats why it was only $5. It was formatted wrong at the factory or perhaps the components were extremely cheap. Ive since tried this and another stick of the same make and model on mine and my fathers machines, it too was formatted as a MBR in FAT. I did find that it being formatted this way makes it easier to remove since you don't have to use the "safely remove this device" .... you can just unplug it.

Being formatted as FAT16 is ok too. But I'll note that there has been an occasional report of flash drives coming "pre-infected" from the factory with viruses.

 OMG!! My anti-virus should of caught this. It was installed and updated on all 3 machines to current specs. However I have not seen any evidence of a virus infection. Just to be sure I will do a low level format and re-format with NTFS or possibly with a image of the re-install and drivers cd's. ~sigh~ I guess you get what you pay for.

I was not implying your USB stick had a virus, just commenting that it has been known to happen.
