Default Inappropriate Network Names - 01-07-2010, 12:25 AM

Since this is the general discussion thread, I figured I'd generally discuss...

In the heart of Rockville, MD, my iPhone picked up this wireless network.

It was the only network connection available and I lost the signal before the phone actually connected.

It wasn't until a few days later flipping through the images on my phone that it made me think. How many people would have to broadcast inappropriate network names before they made a law about it? I guess it would really only take one person to find it offensive, it would just have to be the right one person. If this network were near a popular wifi hot spot like Panera Bread or Starbucks where lots of people would see it on a daily basis, do you think the retailer or a patron could file a complaint?

I've heard of other, even less printable SSIDs, exhorting leechers to get their own WiFi. I sort of agree that it would probably be better to not broadcast the SSID in that case, but that can cause problems of its own.

where I work we used to be near the pitt campus and we could see all of the dorms / housing wifi network and there were a ton of inappropriate names.

I am not really sure there is much you can actually do. Aside from connecting to their network, logging into their router using the default password and changing the ssid.

Not that I would ever do that.

I'm not sure that a government can create legislation against rude wireless network names, can they? Even if they could, imagine policing it!

Anyway, interesting that you found it. I've never seen an inappropriate ssid - mainly hotels and coffee shops.

In my opinion, this falls under freedom of speech... and the fact that you own the property. I do not think they can pass legislation that dictates how you use your wireless AP (specifically what SSID name you are broadcasting)

Bah. I just use a nonsensical (alphanumeric) SSID and WPA2-AES- nobody's getting in.

I doubt it'll ever go that far but you can't post signs in your yard or in your windows with inappropriate messages. They also limit what you can get on a personalized license plate.
