Lightbulb Free Netbook Theft Recovery Software - 11-19-2009, 06:46 PM

Best free software solution for recovering a stolen netbook (or other device) is PREY.

After spending so much time installing/modding/hacking to get my DM10v running OSX I would hate to loose it due to theft. I have installed and tested the Prey software and it work even better than expected!!!

After using this gem I thought it was missing something, what if I could track it with my mobile phone (iPhone for me). So basically I use Gmail for my email and I can forward a email with specific criteria (Subject, From email, etc...) to another email. Using the Carrier SMS Gateway email I can forward those messages a SMS/MMS to my phone. Would be nice if this was included but it's a good workaround solution (for me).

Thought this might be useful since everyone that uses this site has spent a considerable amount of time on their netbooks, would hate to see those efforts lost on something can could be saved with a free program. Better to be proactive than reactive.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention that it can run on Mac OSX, Linux and Windows. So a multi-boot machine could also be monitored running under any OS.

Cheers,
--Phill

Thank you very much for posting this information.

This looks quite good for any laptop ... I'm considering installing it on my Mini10v, as well as on both of my wife's machines (Mini10v & MacBookPro15inch).

Prey released an app for the Android Community. Personally, I like Wave Secure for my Android but, Prey is great for my Mini. Thank's for the post!
