Default Does a Mini Have Social Effects? - 09-28-2009, 08:51 AM

You ever got into something in real life through your mini?

Edit: Comic from XKCD

I get more comments on my Mini than my MBP, mostly from other engineers wanting something small to lug around to class.

Especially around the university I get comments all the time. I'll use the Mini in a class and people's heads will turn to stare. Out in the hallway, random people ask if it's actually a laptop. Women often comment that it is cute. Most of the time people will look at the screen as well, and since I am running OS X they always ask about that. One week I swore that around 50 people had stopped to either compliment my netbook or ask questions. This also applies when I go to family functions.

Most of the time, I don't, but then again, I'm usually only at home or at work using it. The questions stopped right around day one.

That said, I do get occasional questions, nothing that has ever lead to a whole lot. One of the waitresses at my favorite Friday lunch destination has a netbook (Acer, IIRC), and we chatted about them for a bit. She got a kick out of it since it had the Apple sticker on it and was running OS X (this was back when I still had a Mini 9).

I was going to go into the Windows 7 launch event next week in Detroit with the Apple logo on it and running OS X, but if Ballmer is there, that may not be such a good idea.

~lol~ That cartoon was funny.

Maybe there are social effects, but there aren't any for me, so I wouldn't know exactly.

To be honest, I keep my computers hidden & nicely tucked away for the most part; I also use it mostly at home in bed. It's really nice I can just pick it up & go where I want with it in the house or the porch. (It's too troublesome to do that with my laptop.)

For the most part, I don't go outside with my Mini 'cause I wouldn't want any one falling in love with it (& then attempting to take mine). The Mini is so cute that it's theft-worthy. I know when I 1st saw 1 I just wanted to pick it up & walk away with it!

~lol~ My Mini is for my eyes only. (I'm like, "Sorry! They'll have to go get their own.") I giggle to myself because I really shouldn't love a computer that much (but I do).

I might also mention that the Mini 9 got more attention than my 10v, probably because it's smaller, but then again I haven't had a 10v as long as I have the Mini 9. Just an observation.

And netbooks are becoming more and more common. Depending on when you got the Mini 9, it may have been "more of a deal" to have a netbook.

I remember the first time I saw netbooks I was like "Oh cool! Look at that..." and now it is just commonplace. Also, do you have an Apple sticker on the Mini 9 and Mini 10v or just the Mini 9? (because that could be another factor)

I have mine mostly open with the innards all over the desk, thinking what to mod next (like, find out if a hardware mod would give BT AND sleep with OS X.) Haven't had the Mini out yet.

P.S.: Qagak, you're so right...
