I'm afraid if I whipped mine out in public..... someone would try to take it from me (rob me). Around here.... people dont pull out laptops in public. The ONLY time I have ever seen people doing it was at the local ihop in the good neighborhood and in the morning.(ihop has free wifi).

Dude, where do you live??

I get comments on my Mini 9 running 10.6.1 all the time, not least because I've very carefully placed three Apple stickers, one on top of the other, on the back of my machine where they perfectly cover the Dell logo.

Heh, I had a girl ask me about my MSI Wind one time. It's actually kind of cool that new technology like that can actually encourage someone to 'break the ice' so to speak. I don't use my Wind in public, but rather my Lat e6400, and while I think it's worth turning a few heads, I guess Panera Bread isn't the place to experience that. I do think that coffee shops/cafes make for a comfortable atmosphere for a person to talk to someone he or she doesn't know. What sucks where I live is that my absolutely favorite coffee shop closed and now all we're left with is crappy Starbucks.

My mini still gets a lot of attention at places but especially at work since I like to enjoy retro games on it. People know me as a total geek. When I come to work, they know I'm bringing my netbook on break to shoot Mad Dog McCree or to eat pac dots or play Halo or Blaster Master ;-).

The social effect for me is a toss up between 'wow that's cool' or 'it can't do anything more, it's just a netbook' jargon.
