Default Netbooks and basic video=fail? good? OSX+netbook better? - 09-09-2009, 12:57 AM

Someone I know has an Asus EEE PC. I've used it, but have noticed abysmal performance even when just viewing basic youtube. If one puts OSX on a Dell mini 9 or 10v. Is there dramatically better youtube or online video performance? I'm just curious. I don't want to blow a bunch of money on a dell mini and not be able to view basic video on the net.

I know it's not expected to do HD video, i don't expect it too. But it'd be nice to view youtube without being bogged down and end up frame by frame.

The Flash plugin's performance might not be up to par, but the hardware is capable. On my Mini 9 with Linux, I download YouTube videos and play them easily in a regular video player. I don't know how well the Flash plugin performs under OSX, though.

Flash on Mac is okay, but not great. It works for the occasional YouTube clip but that's about it. Video actually works well on netbooks, I watch DVDs all the time on Windows XP/7 and Mac. I also can enjoy mp4 video full screen, it's just Flash that gives the problem.

It plays standard 700Mb encoded DVDs really well. I think it will play 720P video fine as long as it is not H.264. Youtube plays fine, not HDyoutube. Hulu is watchable as long as you set settings to low.
