Default Best iChat application for Mini - 11-27-2008, 03:50 PM

Anybody have any experience with a Windows program that is compatible with iChat on the mac. My daughter is an iChat user and I'd like to be able to video 'chat' with her. Thanks. Jon

my co-worker ran into this problem chatting to his GF. There isn't any program that you can download to get to work with her iChat to do video. You and her will both need to use windows live messenger or yahoo chat. They ended up with windows live messenger, i think i would go with that route if i were you as well the camera protocols run much smoother than yahoo in my own opinion

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to connect with AIM from AOL. I'm not sure if it's a good chat app, but it's the most compatible with iChat. You should be able to connect via voice and video... the others would just be text chat.

The AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) works great with it. I use it with various members of my family all the time. iChat uses the AIM protocol underneath anyway, which really helps.

I've always found Yahoo messenger slow in all forms, and especially invasive on the Windows side. AIM is pretty clean for a branded messenger.

Pigin doesn't support the video aspect last I checked, but it's been since it's name change from GAIM that I last checked.

I use a Dell Mini9 with OS X, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, 802.11n Airport card, and IrDA.

As others have mentioned, iChat works best with the real AIM client (when Apple first released iChat they had a licensing agreement with AIM to use their network [I always use my mac.com login on AIM these days]). I suggest installing the latest version of AIM and then googling "AIM ad hack". It's a program that strips out all the ads and extra crap that AIM installs, giving you a nice lean version of AIM (very comparable to iChat in the end, IMHO). The website that offers it may look a little shady, but I've been using it for years with no problems.
