Default Alternate Intel drivers for GMA500/950 may help performance - 08-24-2009, 02:07 PM

I was recently made aware of Intel's Embedded Graphics Drivers which support both the 945GSE chipset as used in the Mini 9 and 10v, and the US15 chipset as used in the Mini 10 and 12. Among the benefits claimed are these:

Quote:
2D acceleration Improved performance of applications which take advantage of OS acceleration APIs, including X11 XAA interface, or Microsoft DirectDraw* interface
Microsoft Direct3D* and Microsoft D3D Mobile* support Improved performance for 3D applications utilizing Microsoft DirectX* APIs for Microsoft Windows operating systems
OpenGL for Linux

* OpenGL on supported 2.6 kernel Linux distributions for advanced 3D graphics acceleration on dual independent displays
* OpenGL ES 1.1 supported on the IntelĀ® System Controller Hub US15W
* Open GL 2.0 supported on IntelĀ® System Controller Hub US15W on Linux*, Microsoft Windows XP*, Microsoft Windows XP Embedded* and Microsoft Windows CE*; on , IntelĀ® Q45 Express Chipset, IntelĀ® Q35 Express Chipset on Linux*
* OpenGL 1.5 supported on the Mobile IntelĀ® GME 965 Express and IntelĀ® Q965 Express chipsets
* OpenGL 1.4 supported on the Mobile IntelĀ® GME965 Express, IntelĀ® Q965 Express, Mobile IntelĀ® 945GME Express, IntelĀ® 945G Express, Mobile IntelĀ® 915GME Express, IntelĀ® 915GV Express, and Mobile IntelĀ® 910GMLE Express chipsets

Upscaling Lower-resolution modes can be displayed full screen with configurations that support upscaling (example: internal LVDS, and Chrontel* CH7308*)
Hardware video decode acceleration support (IntelĀ® System Controller Hub US15W only)

* Relieves decode burden from the processor, and reduces power consumption of the system
* MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264 and VC-1 formats supported in Wind River Linux,* Red Hat Embedded Linux* and Red Flag Linux* via VA-API
* MPEG2, H.264, VC-1 formats supported in Microsoft Windows XP*, Microsoft Windows XP Embedded*, Microsoft Windows Embedded for Point of Service* via DXVA
* MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264 formats supported in Microsoft Windows CE*

Anti - Aliasing (IntelĀ® System Controller Hub US15W Only) Minimizes distortion when displaying high-resolution video at lower resolutions. Supported on Linux*, Microsoft Windows XP*, Microsoft Windows CE*
Windows XP SP3 is supported. I have been told that these drivers will also load on Windows Vista. Some distributions of Linux are also supported, though Ubuntu is not listed.

I have not tried this myself, but if someone wants to be adventurous and give a report, please do. I suggest doing a backup or whatever is needed to "back out" the drivers if they don't work for you. On Windows, setting a system restore point before installing is probably worthwhile.

Note that a free registration is required in order to do the download.

Someone please try this! If it works, I'll promptly add it to the Driver list compilation for the Mini9.

Sorry, but most of that stuff is not available for the 945. The 945 can't do hardware mpeg2,mpeg4 etc decoding, that's for the 500. It can't do opengl 2.0, again 500.

Most of that stuff is only applicable to the 500. Also, XAA is being deprecated especially for the intel chipset as uxa is what's being actively worked on.

If you want faster 945 performance, you need to use a kernel >= 2.6.30 and turn on kernel mode switching and run an Xorg version that is fairly new (you'd have to run karmic ubuntu or debian unstable etc). Also, turning off Tiling helps.

There are other claimed features that are supported on the 945, but you're right that a lot of them are US15 (GMA500) only.

Any tips on how to install on the Mini 10 - I notice there are DTD profiles for a 1024x600 screen, but not for a 1024x576 one. I'm lost when trying to do this!

mini 10 (via UK Dell outlet), Z520, 1024x576 , 6-cell, no BT
ordered & installed: BT module, US keyboard
