Default Preferred movie format? - 07-17-2009, 10:39 PM

I'm going on a trip and looking to load some movies on an SD card/Memory Stick Pro, but I don't know what format to convert them to? I'm looking for something that's compressed so I can fit a few on the card, but also plays smoothly, and isn't too grainy. I plan to use them with VLC Media player/Windows Media player (whichever you suggest), and if it matters, I'm running a Dell Mini 9 with 1.6 Processor, 2GB RAM, and Windows XP Home. If you have an outside-the-box suggestion, ie install Linux and play from there, etc., feel free to suggest that too!

Thanks!

I played some XVID-encoded movies from an SD card and had no trouble at all.

Indeed. I just did a preliminary test encoding a 1.5 hour in XVID .avi format. It worked really well and I was able to get it under a gig with pretty good quality at 640x360. Thanks for the advice .

I'd use .mkv files for low filesize and good quality. Windows media player seems to play them better than VLC for some reason. A full film is around 350MB.
