I didn't try 3 but I put Age of Empires 2 + expansion and it runs perfect (also takes up a pretty small footprint compaired to part 3)

Wow, so... OK! I just finally got around to installing Age of Empires III over the weekend. With all of the settings turned down, it runs pretty good. It's choppy on the menu screen before you start the game, but once you start playing, it smooths out until there's a lot going on. I only tried it with 1GB of RAM, but installed a 2GB chip shortly after. I was also running it with Windows 7. But it should work.

OH! And it runs in 1024x600 resolution so there's not stretching or crappy picture.
