Default Mini 9 / Win7 256 color mode is ALL WRONG! - 11-16-2009, 08:18 PM

I've rebuilt my Mini 9 recently, and I've got the latest (8.14.10.1930) drivers for the 945gm chipset in Win7, which are pretty much perfect and even run freelancer now!

However I'm still getting this awful bug with colour reproduction in 256 colour mode. For some reason any 8-bit game I launch looks pallete-swapped to all hell. I can't find this phenomenon described anywhere on these forums, or the internet at large, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one. It's really weird though, I'll post a picture if anyone wants to see.

Has anyone come across this and/or found a workaround?

Cheers,

~Loz

Apologies for the slightly overdramatic thread title. After some further investigations I don't believe the issue is limited to the Mini 9. I've just experienced the same weird colours on my desktop (running Windows 7 Pro as well), but it has a GeForce 9600GT, so it's not the graphics card...

I'm pretty sure it's a problem with 256 color mode DirectDraw. Nobody else come across this one?

What game(s) is it effecting? I tried StarCraft on my mini 9 and the latest version of the game the colors are all messed up. But if I keep StarCraft at 1.5whatever it looks fine.

It's happening on Ys 1&2 Complete, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (in 256 colour mode) and it used to happen on Fallout 1 until I got the hi-res patch and put it onto 16-bit colour rendering. I've just been playing about with D3DWindower and DXWnd with varying success, but they seem to use a lot of resources. I'm thinking it might be worth a try to install DirectX 7 and see if that makes any difference...

I've discovered the fix to this, and it's bizarre to say the least. If you open up the 'Screen Resolution' window off the Desktop, and keep that open whilst launching a 256-colour DirectDraw game, the colours are fine, and stay fine throughout the game. Odd! Anyway, give it a try! I do hope Microsoft releases a hotfix for this one.
