Default Halo - 10-06-2008, 12:02 PM

heres a tip to get Halo to run as best as it can on your Dell Mini

1. Find or make a shortcut to Halo

2. In the target box,add these 2 arguments at the end-

-novideo [-useff OR -use00]*

The no video skips the intro movies and useff forces Halo to use barely minimum graphics options to run the game.

*UPDATE- It turns out that using -use00 actually gives more of a performance boost over -useff, however,it forces all player models in multiplayer to be gray, so pick which one works better for you.

3. Minimize your settings. I use 640x480 resolution,Vsync, everything either on Low or Off. I use Hardware accelerated sound as it might save some cpu cycles. But im not sure. I would advise testing on this setting, however,my game runs ok with it on,so I never tried it off.

4. To save some space on your SSD-

If you plan on either only playing single player or multiplayer, but not both, you can delete the map files for what you are not going to play. I would actually advise that you maybe move the maps to an external drive like an SDHC card incase you change your mind. They are located,by default,in-

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\MAPS

Single Player Map List-

a10
a30
a50
b30
b40
c10
c20
c40
d20
d40

If you notice, they are basically all the maps with a letter and 2 numbers. Delete or move them to another device if you want to save space because you are only going to play Multiplayer.

Total space saved- 623 megs

Multiplayer Map List-

beavercreek
bloodgulch
boardingaction
carousel
chillout
damnation
dangercanyon
deathisland
gephyrophobia
hangemhigh
icefields
infinity
longest
prisoner
putput
ratrace
sidewinder
timberland
wizard

Move or delete these if you are only going to play single player.

Total space saved- 266 megs

Whatever u do,dont delete the Bitmaps, sounds, and ui files. There might actually be a way to delete the campaign voice files out of the sounds file for the Multiplayer only user, but im not going to get into that...

Just loaded my copy on the mini. I play it for about 15 mins a day in online mode to relax. It autoloaded to version 1.8. The game play is smooth but some locations are better than others. Feels like I am lagging on some locations. But I am happy to have it up and running.

I installed this earlier on my mini (checking it over before xmas) and was amazed too see that it defaulted the textures to high :?
I completely forgot about this post, will give it a try when I actually get my Mini.

EDIT:: I just updated to the latest patch and im sure performance has got alot worse.

I'm playing through Halo but without any patch and it runs fine on lowest setting, some lag on VERY intense areas (multiple vehicles, 50 enemies)

gameplay tip.
you may already know this, but if you mele attack and then throw a grenade you can instantly mele attack again. its good for just a little more of a "punch" on those pesky red elites that you run across all too often on legendary.

there are few things more satisfying then a quick double punch to your enemy's face reducing his shields just enough to see him engulfed in a frag explosion and plume of purple blood
